58 S The world’s first 3D-printed superyacht, Pegasus , is stocked with innovative ideas that will challenge – and change – the way vessels are designed and created SAILING INTO THE FUTURE D esigner Jozeph Forakis recently unveiled his concept for an 88-metre‘invisible’ superyacht. Based in NewYork and Milan, Forakis has an international reputation as a designer and innovator. With six patents that give him real street credibility. Forakis designs for the high-tech, mobile communications, and marine industries. His latest project, and perhaps his most grandiose, is the super luxury yacht Pegasus , named after the mythical winged horse. And like its namesake, the boat actually does have wings of a sort. The key concept behind the mega-yacht is a zero carbon-footprint. Pegasus will be powered entirely by solar energy. The electricity from the yacht’s massive solar panels will convert seawater into hydrogen by using electrolysis, where seawater is broken up into oxygen and hydrogen molecules. Next, the gas gets pumped into hydrogen fuel cells where it is converted into electricity. That electricity is stored in short-term Lithium-ion batteries. The hydrogen power plant will make the yacht environmentally friendly while providing it with an almost infinite range on the water. There will never be a need to top up any fossil fuels.Another useful feature is that the solar panels generate electricity for seawater desalination, so the boat will never run out of fresh water.
